EDIT: I didn't miss the deadline after all! If you want to vote for this piece, or just vote at all in the contest for the new Susan Kay's Phantom cover art, go here [link]

----Original Description----

*sigh* The cover that was never meant to be. I made this for the Kay Cover Art contest [link] but apparently missed the deadline, which was unclear. So... oh well. What a waste of time.

Oil on canvas.

^^ The cover that was never meant to be, eh? Oh, well, such a pity, because I could totally have loved to buy a copy of the book with this as a cover...the painting is magnificent, and it really gets across the whole idea. I'm so sorry you missed that deadline, how awful!

Awww damn that's a terrific shame you missed the deadline. <_< Nonetheless this is a glorious painting and I love it. It really conveys the entire theme of the book without overtly showing "Erik" or "Christine" in human form. Wonderful. Especially love how you've painted the nightingale's eye. I don't know why, but there seems to be a ton of emotion reflected in that little black orb.

This is just a personal interpretation but I also like how the nightingale is concentrating solely on the blooming rose and not paying any attention to the bud beside it. For me, that could be a reference to Erik not giving a damn about the other singers, girls in the corps de ballet and basically anyone else around him in the Opera, save for his one blooming rose. Simply stunning work, Fishy.

Much love
~Forest

You know I love this one, Fishy. And I think Llumina should be shot for not being more clear about the deadline. *hugs* A very unusual yet poignant cover - it would have stood out.

Aww... thanks. Yeah, I was pretty bummed too, but it turns out they just didn't put it up immediately? I was confused. But happily surprised. XD

Wow, thank you so much for this kind comment. :D That's a very cool interpretation of the little rosebud-- what I was thinking when I did it was about how in the story, the white rose originally would not open her petals to him because Allah had forbidden it-- and the closed rose symbolizes how he has been shut out by everyone thus far in his life. Christine is the only white rose who will bloom for him, or something like that... it sounded romantic in my head. XD

Thank you so much again, and for the fave. I really appreciate hearing what you think, and thank you for being such a regular reviewer.
